SILVER-GILT TROPHY CUP IN FORM OF A HOT-AIR BALLON. Köln. Cologne, presumably beginning of the 20th century. Gabriel Hermeling. Silver, gilt. On flat circular foot the model of a hot air balloon with wicker basket and carrying rope. The balloon envelope as cuppa with removable lid. Obverse inscription'Godesburg' engraved. Ca. 290g. Height 22.5cm. Crescent & crown, standard 800, maker's mark Gabriel Hermeling (from 1861, Scheffler, Rhineland no.774, 775). Condition A. Airship travel has and had found great appeal in Bonn and Bad Godesberg already shortly after the first passenger flight of the Montgolfière in Versailles, which took place in front of the eyes of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette in the year 1783. Already a few months later a hot air balloon took off in Bonn and in 1906 the ""Niederrheinische Verein für Luftschifffahrt, Sektion Bonn"" (Lower-Rhenian Society for Airship Travel, section Bonn) was founded.
